Авторам данного сборника (Ан. Белый, М. Горький, Евг. Замятин, М. Зощенко, В. Каверин, Б. Лавренев, Ю. Либединский, Инк. Никитин, Б. Пильняк, М. Слонимский и др.) были предложены вопросы в виде анкеты. В анкете писатели должны были рассказать о своём литературном творчестве, о методах работы.

Книга была изъята из-за статей писателей Евг. Замятина, Б. Пильняка и хранилась в запрещенных списках до 1988 г.
