Роман норвежского писателя Кнута Гамсуна (наст. имя Кнуд Педерсен; 1859-1952), лауреата Нобелевской премии по литературе (1920).
М. Горький сказал о нем: «В современной литературе я не вижу никого, равного ему по оригинальности творчества» (1928).
После прихода Гитлера к власти и во время Второй мировой войны Гамсун встал на сторону нацистов. После окончания войны Гамсун был отдан под суд, был оштрафован по гражданскому иску.
