Книга издана в память об историке Василие Осиповиче Ключевском (1841-1911), активно сотрудничавшем с журналом «Научное слово». В сборнике приняли участие все ученики В.О. Ключевского, написавшие под его руководством диссертацию (М. Любавский, М. Богословский, С. Платонов, А. Кизеветер и Ю. Готье), а так же другие историки, знакомые с ним лично и испытавшие в знчительной мере его влияние (Б. Сыромятников, А. Лаппо-Данилевский, Ю. Айхенвальд).
