Идея этого сборника принадлежала Александру Исаевичу Солженицыну (1918-2008). Работа продолжалась около трех лет и уже близилась к окончанию, когда Солженицын был арестован. В сборник вошли следующие статьи Солженицына: «На возврате дыхания и сознания», «Раскаяние и самоограничение как категории национальной жизни», «Образованщина».
